With the help of a lower housemaid, the only servant she could find indoors, Melinda put on her riding habit. It still fit, but was loose around her waist from having lost weight. Even before her father died, the garment had been shabby. Now with years of being folded and stored away, there were creases and patchy fading of the material that could not be hidden.

Thank goodness she had no plans on impressing Mr. Marlowe!

Melinda would have mounted the horse by herself, but Marlowe held out a hand for her to step into. He tossed her up, and for a moment she was flying, light as a feather, before settling into the saddle.

She hooked her leg, smoothing down her skirt with one hand, while the other held the reins of her mount. Marlowe was on his own horse before she finished.

“Miss Wychwood, you know the area. Why don’t you lead?”

Melinda barely heard him. She was in a saddle for the first time in six years. She swayed with the horse’s movement as they stepped out down the lane. Her heart was overflowing, and her eyes misty.

“There is a country lane that has a good place to gallop.”

“Let us go.”

Indeed, let her go. Let her go.
